Contexte

  • Infrastructure multi-services : PHP + API .NET + reverse proxy

Impact & envergure

Context

Absoluflash is a Flash games platform. The original site had completely vanished from the Internet. Everything needed to be rebuilt - not from a backup, but from scratch.

Absoluflash Interface

The Process:

Step 1 - Recovery from Archives

I located archived captures of the original site on the Wayback Machine (web.archive.org). This gave me access to the original HTML structure, assets, and content - but in a fragmented and static form. For the thousands of games that the Wayback Machine couldn’t archive, I recovered and restored them manually, building custom internal tools to accelerate and automate this massive data recovery effort.

Step 2 - Python Scraper (scrapping-absoluflash)

I wrote a custom Python scraper to systematically extract and reconstruct all the content from the archived captures:

  • HTML parsing to extract game metadata, thumbnails, and categories
  • Downloading and reorganizing all media files
  • Generating a structured dataset ready for migration to a CMS

The base Python script used to initiate this extraction is available on GitHub (scrapping-absoluflash).

Technical highlights

  • Complete site recovery from scratch - no backup, no source code
  • Reverse engineering of the original CSS theme, frontend JavaScript, and legacy cookie logic used for game IDs
  • Creation of a custom SWF and Shockwave (DCR) game loader with automatic format detection and graceful error handling
  • Integration of automated Discord webhooks to alert me instantly if a game fails to load in production
  • Development of a bespoke PHP templating system to serve dynamic content
  • Multi-service infrastructure: PHP + .NET API + reverse proxy

Impact & scale

The restored platform successfully revived the original experience and gathered an active community:

  • Over one million games played since the relaunch
  • Hundreds of returning visitors each month
  • A fully functional and resilient platform built from the ashes of dead web archives

The website was even featured by several youtubers !
